There is no doubt that India is one of the most culturally diverse places on earth if not the most! India is also spiritually diverse as it is culturally diverse. It is home to many religions and also the birthplace of some of the world’s major religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.
Christianity is India’s third largest religion according the census of 2001 and according to Historical accounts it was introduced to India by the Apostle Thomas in 52 A.D. However, though the origins of Christianity in India remain unclear, there is a scholarly consensus that Christianity was rooted in India as early as 6th Century A.D. and could possibly even date as far back as the 1st Century. Christianity was as such established in India even before some nations of Europe had been Christianized. (Wikipedia)
Over the years there has been much controversy over conversions and the proselytizing of the masses in India. According to the constitution of India, every Indian citizen has the right to practice and promote their respective religion peacefully. However, there have been several instances of religious intolerance leading to riots, violence, rapes and even death. Such incidents have been condemned and criticized by national and international governments, judicial systems and the media.
One way of bridging the great spiritual divide and also developing tolerance towards others is to have healthy discussion that will lead to an understanding at least if not necessarily an agreement.
